Frenzy over Michael Jordan documentary
‘‘Tiger King"-mania was so yesterday. The reign of ESPN’s documentary series ‘‘The Last Dance’’ has begun.
Twitter went nuts on Monday with the first two episodes of the 10-part ESPN series documenting the rise and dominance of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
The first episode set the scene with Jordan’s arrival from University of North Carolina. It featured former President Barack Obama, introduced as ‘‘former Chicago resident,’’ who discussed the difficulty in getting Bulls tickets once Jordan joined the team.
Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson raved about The Last
Dance on Twitter, before calling Jordan one of the greatest entertainers of all time.
‘‘Michael Jordan’s Last Dance was fantastic and I loved all two hours of it!! Young fans that never got to see Michael play now understand why he’s the (G.O. A.T.) of basketball!’’ Johnson wrote. ‘‘Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, and Beyonc??? are the three greatest entertainers of my lifetime; and you could probably throw Muhammad Ali in there.’’
Actress Gabrielle Union, the wife of NBA star Dwyane Wade, called the episodes ‘‘so damn good’’ and lamented the early treatment of Bulls star Scottie Pippen, documented in the second ‘‘Last Dance’’ episode.
‘‘I don’t think I’m gonna be able to sleep tonight thinking about Scottie’s terrible contract. wrote.
Wade couldn’t wait for the show to start tweeting, ‘‘Going bananas bro,’’ just beforehand. It definitely lived up to the hype in his eyes.
‘‘If I had 3 wishes in life. I think I would have asked for #TheLastDance,’’ he wrote, before extolling Jordan’s virtues. ‘‘Man MJ had it! He had that ‘‘IT’’ He was chosen to be the GOAT.’’
Football star J.J. Watt praised University of North Carolina coach Dean Smith for urging Jordan to play professional basketball.
‘‘Dean Smith telling Michael Jordan to go pro because that’s what was best for him, instead of telling him to stay which would have been best for Dean Smith,’’ tweeted Watt. ‘‘That’s a coach you want to play for.’’ #LastDance,’’
