TO THE POINT

If you read the small print you can see that an unbearable 20 per cent rates increase is planned by Wellington City Council in the next two years. I beg councillors to concentrate on reducing costs instead of seeking personal publicity by adding nice-to-haves as reported so often in the last couple of weeks.

Already it seems that Level 3 is harder than level 4. The slight hint of messaging ambivalence and the astonishing fact that when the hurdle is lowered many people actually surge towards McDonald’s are uncomfortable.

I’m forecasting a spike in Covid-19 cases. Watching the TV news they showed queues of people buying takeaways, paying with a card, and punching in their Pin numbers before driving off to enjoy their finger licking good. What did we learn?

Bill Aitchison, Carterton

It seems a bit odd that people already refuse to sign up to any tracking app that may help NZ get over Covid-19. Every Sim card carried in a phone already gives police or customs or immigration perfect tracing capability.

Amazon has donated £250,000 towards a fund supporting UK bookshops during the pandemic crisis. Not much really when you think of all the bookshops and the extra profits Amazon is making during the pandemic. At the same time it has opened its own bookshop in Seattle and there are rumours it will open another 400. World domination is the trajectory for Amazon. I hope we will all support our local bookshops.

For the first time the governor of the Reserve Bank has used a classic Social Credit term – ‘‘Monetise’’ (April 26) – to suggest a possible way out of the financial crisis we will be in post Covid-19. An idea whose time has come?

John Gilbertson, Napier

I would just like to let you know the plastic bags our newspaper is delivered in are excellent as makeshift gloves for collecting feijoas, and as bags for leaving those feijoas at our gate for our neighbours. We usually get too many feijoas for ourselves so it is great to be able to share them with others.

Joanna Saywell, Feilding

Re David Nicholson’s ‘‘herd immunity’’ v ‘‘social immunity’’ (To the Point, April 25), as a farmer of bovines for 45 years – and an observer of humans for longer – I believe that herd immunity is the appropriate term.
