Cliff top class in Pukerua Bay

-

AN EXCITING Pukerua Bay home with astounding sea views and unique architecture is for sale for only the second time since it was built 65 years ago.

The amazingly sunny sea cliff property, at

16 Pa Rd, is at the end of a cul-de-sac on a 1993-square metre section next to bush reserve. It’s perched high above Brendan Beach with panoramic views that sweep from the South Island to north of Paraparaumu.

As well as the two-bedroom split-level house, which architect Cyril Whitmore designed to be his own home, there’s an attached two-bedroom studio, a potter’s studio, and a workshop -- all overlooking the ocean.

The 180sqm house evokes mid-century modernism with a Frank Wright influence, complete with a discreet waterfall and a sculpture wall in the enchanting courtyard garden entrance that the vendor landscaped. The latter’s leafy, Zen-like seclusion also includes a sheltered patio, stone walls and a feature rock wall with embedded fossils.

The rock wall also extends along one side of the large, light-filled lounge and incorporates a rustic open fireplace and built-in storage.

The spacious open-plan living/dining areas have a raked ceiling, with exposed painted rafters, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that maximises the breathtaking outlook over native bush towards Kapiti Island.

The living/dining areas open to a tiered, wraparound deck that also can be accessed from the galley kitchen, with its mahogany joinery, matai floorboards, underbench oven and electric cooktop.

The main bedroom is on an upper level with extensive built-in storage, and views of the sea on one side and the courtyard on the other. The second double-bedroom opens to the deck and has sea views and two double-wardrobes with storage above.

The adjoining bathroom is partly tiled with a shower over the bath, vanity and toilet.

The well-presented open-plan two-bedroom studio is externally accessed.

It has a kitchen and living/dining area with a native timber ceiling and window seat sea views on the upper level, and two bedrooms and a bathroom below.

A historical doorway that once integrated the dwellings has been closed in.

The separate pottery studio includes an eatin kitchen with native timber floorboards, a carpeted living area with sea views and a recessed woodburner on a pebble hearth, and stairs that ascend to a bedroom, with its own bathroom (with mosaic floor tiles) and descend to an office or utility room.

“This incredibly unique home stands out for its extraordinary views, privacy, versatility and iconic mid-century architecture,” agent Della Randall says.

“It’s perfect for artists, writers, all the creative groups and anyone who wants to work from home.

“Where better to escape the rest of the world while being just a half-hour drive from Wellington City?”
