TO THE POINT

I find the lack of questioning of the decision to keep us restricted in level 2 for another month astonishing. Winston Peters expressed the perfectly logical, evidence-based opinion that we should be in level 1 now, it’s brushed off by the prime minister, and the media instead obsess about a baseball cap. Why are we still waiting?

I couldn’t agree more with Susan Gibson about buying a wool carpet and supporting NZ (Letters, May 28). The Government should play its part through building, regulation and subsidies, and farmers could help themselves by voting in favour of a levy to support the wool industry instead of expecting the market to work miracles for them.

Despite what Lana Hart thinks

(We can take 10 million, with planning,

May 25), we do not need to double our population to 10 million people. Apart from the obvious benefit to the economy, there is not one other redeeming feature. We are the envy of the world for a number of good reasons, the main one being we are totally and utterly uncrowded and we enjoy some of the best scenery in the world.

While it’s good to have longdistance bus travel available again, the new InterCity fare schedule will make this unaffordable for many. A standard fare from Wellington to Palmerston North, previously around $22, now costs over $60. Are they trying to claw back lost revenue from the lockdown?

Deputy National leader Nikki Kaye is said to have incorrectly stated that finance spokesman Paul Goldsmith is Ma¯ ori. NZ citizens have a right to know, who, by definition, is Ma¯ ori. Government departments are constantly quoting statistics about Ma¯ ori, so clearly this issue is very important if those statistics are to have any credence.

Viruses have been circulating the globe by airborne transmission on a seasonal basis for millennia, long before animal and human dissemination. If politicians and advisers could mitigate this transference, only then should deity status be bestowed upon them.

My hat box contains many hats but is missing the two versions of the MAGA cap: Make America Great Again and Make Ardern Go Away. Instead of National Party leader Todd Muller’s MAGA hat being retired as a consequence of him moving to another office, I could give it a good home.
