Prime sheep rise $3 to $5 a head

Prime sheep rose $3 to $5 a head at livestock sales at Canterbury Agricultur­al Park, in Christchur­ch, this week.

The prime cattle market lifted 3c/kg to 5c with the best steers making as much as 326c.

In a lighter yarding of prime lambs the best of them reached $137. Prime lambs Values: In a lighter yarding of prime lambs the market remained strong from last week. Heavy lambs made $125-$130 with the odd sale to $137, medium $110-$120 and light $90-$105.

Sales included: Ag-Research (Lincoln) 31 lambs at $124-$129, Waipuna Enterprise­s (Irwell) 20 lms at $122-$130, Rural Vision (Cashmere) 14 lms at $128-$130, Roper & Sons (Lincoln) 24 lms at $112-$124, VB Jensen (Waikari) 40 lms at $128-$137, MA & JA Sidey (Waipara) 23 lms at $130-$135, G E Morris (Southbridg­e) 22 lms at $120-$136, Mahana Contractin­g (Rangiora) 13 lms at $108, J S Sommervill­e (Cheviot) 41 lms at $96-$110, P J Wood (Inland Road) 32 lms at $105-$108, Pinebank (Motukarara) 102 lms at $117-$122. Prime sheep Values: A smaller yarding of prime sheep met with similar demand as weeks gone by with prices rising $3 to $5 a head. Top ewes made $95-$105 with the odd sale to $117, medium $75-$90 and lighter $60-$70.

A G & J M Benny (Leeston) 6 es at $75-$100. , Mt Palm (Rotherham) 12 es at $83, Carrig Farm (Hawarden) 26 es at $82-$87, E W Coop & Sons (Diamond Harbour) 41 es at $69-$95. Store sheep Values: In a light yarding of store lambs the more forward lambs attracted interest, but smaller lambs were more difficult to sell. The best lambs made $80-$85 with the odd sale to $95, medium $70-$75 and small $50-$60.

Sales included: Brackendal­e (Blenheim) 242 male lambs at $75-$95, A Urquhart (Hickory Bay) 44 m/s lms at $59-$79, D Campbell (Waihopai) 44 ewes and 58 lms at $63, W Clarke (Blenheim) 21 ewes, 22 lambs $64. Prime cattle Values: A yarding of 200 catle met good demand and the market improved by 3c/kg to 5c. Steers made 295c/kg to 315c with sales to 326c, heifers 280c to 300c with sales to 314c, cows 130c to 185c with sales to 205c and bulls 220c to 270c.

Store cattle Values: Sales included: A large yarding of store cattle was on offer at this weeks sale. Some very good adult cattle met strong competitio­n as did the top yearlings .
