Oh Romeo, wherefor art thou racing next pray tell?

- JAMIE SEARLE

Oh Romeo’s sale to Hong Kong hinges on a veterinary examination on Tuesday.

Rangiora trainer and partowner Nick Wigley received five phone calls from buyers after Oh Romeo’s nine and a half-length win at Ashburton on Friday. It was the gelding’s second win from as many starts.

Oh Romeo won a maiden race by eight and a half lengths at Ashburton on July 30.

A Hamilton veterinarian will travel to Rangiora to examine Oh Romeo. The horse will be scoped and scans and X-rays taken.

Inglewood Stud, which owns Oh Romeo, is made up of Wigley, wife Carol and their son Gus and his wife Bianca.

‘‘One thing about him [Oh Romeo] is, when he’s two or three lengths clear coming round the turn, the next time you look at him, he’s five lengths in front and at the line, he’s nine lengths in front,’’ Nick said.

‘‘I think there’s another five lengths’ improvement in him.’’

If he is not sold, Oh Romeo could be aimed at next year’s Queensland winter carnival.

‘‘I can see him winning a big race in Queensland.’’

The stud and Nick Wigley’s brother, Bruce, of Sydney, won the Southland Guineas with Replique in February.

After the Guineas, the stud sold its share in Replique to clients of Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse. Bruce retained his share and the filly was exported to Sydney.

Hopes were high for her to race in the Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick in April, but she got crook and didn’t start. She is yet to race in Australia.

She trialled well in a strong field at Randwick on August 19.

Meanwhile Inglewood Studowned Zigwig is earmarked for the 1000m 3-year-old race at Riccarton on Saturday. She will then contest the $50,000 Canterbury Belle Stakes at Riccarton a fortnight later.

‘‘She’s coming up quite nicely,’’ Nick Wigley said.

Zigwig is by the stud’s stallion, Zacinto, who has a full book of 125 mares this season. One of his sons, Ugo Foscolo, remained unbeaten in three starts at Hastings on Saturday for Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh.

Nick Wigley is training two other fillies – a 2-year-old halfsister by Iffraaj to Replique and a 3-year-old by Zacinto from Mystify.
