Heritage desecrated

-

Although most of the first Canterbury pilgrims were members of the Church of England, they built their cathedral to the Glory of God and for the people of Canterbury.

They spelt out their intention on the Foundation Stone, which read in part ‘‘with a grateful heart for the great benefits which God has bestowed upon the sons of Britain dwelling in this new country’’ and in the hope that ‘‘Christ’s Temple resting upon this corner stone may stand for all future years, a strong beautiful noble and conspicuous witness of faith in Christ unconquered and unshaken’’.

How sad that the cathedral seems to have become the possession of a small coterie of sectarian Anglicans who think that it belongs to them. Rev Graeme Brady Nelson
