Man charged with murder in Dunedin

- HAMISH McNEILLY

A man has been found dead in Dunedin and police have charged a man with murder.

The 66-year-old’s body was found at a Brockville home yesterday morning and a 47-year-old man was charged with murder. He will appear in court today. Police said they were carrying out scene examinations at two properties.

The neighbouring houses at 174 and 176 Brockville Rd were both cordoned off.

A post mortem exam is expected to be completed today.

Police said they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident, but inquiries are continuing.

At about about 11.35am yesterday, armed police arrested two men in Dunedin. Police surrounded a black people mover vehicle on Moray Pl, in central Dunedin, before making the arrest.

A witness said he was walking down the street when he suddenly saw ‘‘cops were everywhere’’. ‘‘[I’ve] never seen anything like it.’’

Two men were arrested by police, with one taken to the nearby Dunedin Central Police Station on foot, flanked by detectives. A detective at the scene said it was too early to comment, as it was a ‘‘fluid situation’’.

Police would not comment on whether the arrests were connected to the death.

In what appears to be an unrelated incident in Dunedin yesterday, a large number of militarystyle semi-automatic firearms and a ‘‘significant’’ amount of ammunition was stolen in a break-in.

Acting field crime manager, Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis, said a total of 28 firearms were reported as stolen to police at 5pm on Tuesday – five rifles and 23 handguns.

The owner is a firearms licence holder and the firearms were securely stored at a property in Maitland St.

A police car remained in the driveway at the rear of a block of flats.

‘‘It is extremely important to recover any firearm that is in the wrong hands and police are investigating this crime as a matter of priority,’’ Croudis said.
