A write royal response for Stella

- JONATHAN LEASK

Everyone deserves a card on the their birthday. Six-year-old Stella Bourgeois decided Queen Elizabeth II was no different.

Never did she think she would get a letter back.

‘‘It was the Queen’s birthday, so I sent her a birthday card and a bracelet,’’ Stella said.

She picked out the card and had a spare bracelet, made of ‘‘beads and string’’ she thought the owner of the Crown Jewels might like on her 90th birthday. She tucked it in the envelope for good measure.

In June, Katrina Bourgeois helped her daughter send the card and bracelet off from Oxford, New Zealand, to London, England, with no hope of it ever reaching its intended destination.

‘‘I just wrote ‘to Her Majesty the Queen, Buckingham Palace’ as the address and hoped for the best,’’ she said.

‘‘I put it in the post and even told Stella ‘I don’t think she will ever get this but we will try’, and lo and behold, it did.’’

Somehow, it made it to Buckingham Palace, where it prompted a royal response.

Bourgeois was shocked to find a letter stamped as Royal Mail in the post.

‘‘We thought it would never get to [the Queen],’’ she said.

Stella arrived home from school and opened the special envelope to find a personalised thank you letter from Her Majesty’s lady in waiting, Mary Morrison, and a card from the Queen.

The letter, written by Morrison, thanked Stella for her ‘‘hand-drawn message and colourful little gift’’.

‘‘Although unable to reply to you personally, the Queen was touched by your kindness and greatly appreciates the time and care you have taken,’’ Morrison said.

The card from the Queen thanked Stella for her kind words on the occasion of her 90th birthday.

Evidently, she was amused.
