We can’t get 100pc renewable energy

-

I am a retired electrical engineer and at no time during my working life did I come across a device which would allow, say, green energy to come into a property while rejecting all other energy. I am happy to be proved wrong. For Christchurch City Council to say that it will only use renewable energy is ridiculous.

All of the electricity generated in the South Island is from renewable sources but there are times when the inter-island DC link transmits electricity south and some of the North Island’s generation is from non-renewable sources.

Once the energy is in the national grid, that’s it.

To suggest otherwise can be likened to trying to separate clean water from dirty. At least with dirty water, it can be filtered to produce clean water. John Dodgshun Harewood

The city council now knows that its electricity needs can be supplied by a company (Ecotricity) at no added cost. This supplier does not add to climate change by burning fossil fuels.

Our council can now be an example to other councils on their supply of electricity.

This will lead the fossil-fuel-using companies to create more power in ways that are better for our environment.
