New ways of farming

-

It is reported that anti-farming slurs are hurting sheep and beef farmers (Feb 21). Not only do they face increasing hostility because of the damage they do to the environment; they are also threatened by the development of synthetic alternatives to meat and milk.

There is a solution. Do as Landcorp is doing and explore the economics of converting from the current animal-based production of meat and milk to one based on plants.

New Zealand could lead the world in the development of more efficient and more environmentally friendly ways of growing food.

We should be at the forefront of innovation, not dragging along behind.

Now is the time to cast off old prejudices and embrace new ways of farming. The potential rewards are great.
