. . . is knocking over the Aussies

- BEN STRANG

The White Ferns have skittled Australia for 66 to win their Twenty20 series in Adelaide.

Lea Tahuhu and Holly Huddleston reduced Australia to 9-5, after an early Amelia Kerr run out, and from there the hosts couldn’t find a way to chase down 114 for victory.

Kerr, given leave to play for the White Ferns by Tawa College, started the rot with her run out and then ended with two wickets of her own from three overs.

The victory gave New Zealand a 2-1 series win on Australian soil.

‘‘It’s fair to say that the whole group is pretty chuffed with that series win,’’ captain Suzie Bates said.

‘‘Australia really dominated us [in the first game] and we had to take a hard look at ourselves and work hard in trainings. That’s probably the most pleasing thing, is that we bounced back.

‘‘We’ve bowled extremely well. We’ve been light on runs the whole series, but Lea Tahuhu and Holly Huddleston have put the Australian top order under pressure and that’s been the difference.’’

Australia’s score of 66 all out was their lowest total in an international T20 match.

Australian legspinner AmandaJane Wellington took four wickets

‘‘It’s fair to say that the whole group is pretty chuffed.’’ White Ferns captain Suzie Bates

to help restrict New Zealand to 8-113.

Wellington’s 4-16 from four overs had earlier put the brakes on the Kiwis.

Wellington snared three wickets in an over, the first the prized scalp of Kiwi captain Suzie Bates who top-scored with 31 from 34 balls.

Bates and her opening partner Rachel Priest (17) put on a 36-run stand before Amy Satterthwaite struck 18 from 18 balls.

But Satterthwaite’s dismissal – one of two neat stumpings by Alyssa Healy in the innings – started the dramatic slide: from 69-1 they crashed to 5-71.

Wellington’s fellow spinner Jess Jonassen was also a standout and conceded just three runs from her opening two overs, while Kristen Beams took 2-21.
