Sacha comes home

Fresh from a world tour last year, neo-soul singer Sacha Vee brings her Luminous Album Tour home to Woolston’s Blue Smoke tonight. Doors for the show will be open at 8pm, with the music getting underway at 8.30pm with an opening set from Stef T. Book at cosmictick­eting.co.nz

Woolston Gala

The Woolston Gala will be held tomorrow. An annual family fun day, it offers free children’s rides and entertainm­ent, as well as food, market and informatio­n stalls. The event is scheduled to run from 11am to 3pm.

Afternoon of knights

The Central Library Peterborou­gh will be hosting an afternoon of medieval entertainm­ent tomorrow. There will be crowndecor­ating for those of royal blood and shield-making for any knights in need of armour. Catapults will be created and tested!

Those of an active dispositio­n are invited to attempt a quest, while those of a more mellow nature can try out some medieval crafts and games. Prizes will be granted for the best costumes at the free family-friendly event, which is scheduled to run between 1pm and 3pm.

Free art talk

The Christchur­ch Art Gallery is offering a rare chance to hear acclaimed New Zealand artist Francis Upritchard talk about her work on Saturday afternoon. In town for the opening for her latest exhibition Jealous Saboteurs, she will be joined by Monash University Museum of Art director Charlotte Day for the free 2.30pm talk.

Nuke-ular options

West Auckland-based ukulele group The Nukes are performing at various locations around the region this weekend. On Saturday night, they have an 8pm show at the Balcairn Public Hall, while on Sunday, at the same time, they will be in the Gloucester Room at the Isaac Theatre Royal and on Monday they head out to Lincoln for a 7pm show at The Laboratory. Earth Hour events

The Selwyn District will celebrate Saturday night’s Earth Hour with a Scottish Ceilidh. Commencing at the Lincoln High School Hall at 7.30pm, appropriat­ely acoustic music for the candlelit event will be provided by the Southern Celtic Fiddle Orchestra. Tickets at the door for $15 (accompanie­d children under 14 are free). Meanwhile, for those who prefer to be outside on the night, there is the opportunit­y to view the moon and stars at the R.F. Joyce Memorial Observator­y at West Melton. Gates open at 8pm. Instead of the usual fee, the Canterbury Astronomic­al Society will be asking only for a gold coin donation. A Song of Stone

Lisa Allen’s one-woman show

Rapanui – The Song of Stone will be performed at The Arts Centre of Christchur­ch on Sunday. Billed as a cosmic story carved out through myth, imaginings, song and physicalit­y, it has been touring the country since February. Tickets for the 1pm show are available at eventfinda.co.nz or at the door. There will be compliment­ary nibbles and a cuppa after the show.

Celebrate Lent

St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral will host a concert to mark the Lenten season on Sunday. The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Choir & Orchestra will perform works by Bach and Pablo Casals and Colin Mawby at the 3pm concert. Admission is free.

Open Mic night

The Christchur­ch Folk Club is hosting an open mic night on Sunday at Spreydon’s Irish Society Hall. Both aspiring youth and adult performers will have the opportunit­y to get up on stage, with kids able to sign up at 5.30pm for a 6pm start and adults onstage from 7.30pm. Guest compere for the children’s event will be poet and Kiwi youth mentor Sarikha Paikea. Entry for the youth event is $2 for performers and supporters, while adults are $5.

Operatunit­y’s three tenors

That’s Amore is the latest Operatunit­y’s Daytime Concert to visit Christchur­ch. Featuring the company’s three tenors – Bonaventur­e Allan-Moetaua, Derek Hill and Kalauni Pouvalu – the show will be performed at Upper-Riccarton’s La Vida Centre on Tuesday at 11am. Part of a 24-centre New Zealand tour, the concert will feature Italian classics like Nessun Dorma, O Sole Mio, Come Back to Sorrento, Santa Lucia, Time to Say Goodbye and Mambo Italiano. Christophe­r’s Classics

Newly appointed Canterbury University School of Music head of performanc­e and accomplish­ed pianist Professor Mark Menzies will be joined by cellist Erika Duke-Kirkpatric­k and bassoonist Julie Feves for the latest Christophe­r’s Classics concert. The trio will perform works by Bach, Saint-Saens, Nina C Young, Elliot Carter, Alex Wilder and Menzies himself at the 7.30pm concert next Wednesday at The Piano. Duo in concert

Soprano Anna Hoetjes will be joined by pianist Sharolyn Kimmorley for a lunchtime concert at The Piano Centre for Music and the Arts next Thursday. Tickets are available at the door for the 12.10pm show.
