Adele hates NZ’s bugs but loves our weather
Rapturous reviews followed Adele’s first Auckland concert, but the British singer was less enthused by the local insect life.
The British singer’s set at Mt Smart stadium on Thursday night was disrupted about 8.45pm, when Adele shrieked that a ‘‘hornet’’ had flown into her hair and fallen onto her chest.
Minutes later, she said a ‘‘giant beetle’’ had taken the stage and by about
9pm the beetles tried to climb into Adele’s boot.
‘‘They were nibbling away at my ankle that whole song.’’
The singer screamed and fell to the ground, tearing off her boot. She called for a fan to come on stage to help her deal with the bugs.
Tegan, 15, from Hamilton was rewarded for her bug-shooing efforts with a rare selfie with the superstar.
Tegan, who was visibly nervous taking the stage in front of over 40,000 concert-goers, took the opportunity to gift Adele with a soft-toy Kiwi, which the singer promised to give to her son.
During a break in Thursday’s performance Adele confessed she had found Australia too hot and was enjoying New Zealand’s cooler weather.
‘‘Not only am I happy to be in New Zealand just for being here, but also your weather is much more my cup of tea, it’s much more my bag.’’
Amongst the thousands gushing about their experience the next day was Prime Minister Bill English who said the concert was ‘‘hugely entertaining and the crowd loved it’’.
‘‘I’m a fan. I think she’s a lyrical genius and a fantastic performer.
‘‘Some of it was fairly unpredictable, and almost zany.’’
Gutted to miss ‘‘the concert of a lifetime’’ was Wellington woman Emma Miscall, 35, who found herself trapped in New Plymouth after Jetstar cancelled her flight to Auckland.
‘‘I told them I had paid $330 for my concert tickets, but they said there was nothing they could do.’’
Miscall has battled hodgkins lymphoma twice and a stem cell replacement.
In March last year Miscall walked down the aisle to Adele’s Make You Feel My Love.
‘‘I’m gutted. This was something I was really looking forward too,’’ she said.
A Jetstar spokesman said the airline cancelled two flights from New Plymouth to Auckland today due to pilot sickness at short notice.
Customers were advised of the cancellations by text and email prior to 1pm and offered the option of a full refund or alternative transport to Auckland by bus, he said.
Adele plays two more shows in Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium at 7.30pm on Saturday and Sunday nights.
