Ram raids

Trail of destruction

- JACK FLETCHER

Police are investigating whether three ram raid burglaries in Christchurch in the past month are linked.

Thieves reversed a stolen car through the doors of Henry’s liquor store on Yaldhurst Rd at 2.20am yesterday, making off with an unknown amount of alcohol and causing extensive damage to the store.

It was the third early-morning ram raid burglary in as many weeks. On May 14, a car was reversed into Jemmett’s Powertool Service in Hornby and thousands of dollars of tools were taken. Less than 24 hours later, a car yanked the doors off Peaches & Cream on Colombo St on May 15 and cash was taken.

Whisky and red wine spilled from a Christchurch bottle store after thieves reversed a car through the doors before making off in another vehicle with their loot.

Alcohol fumes wafted across the forecourt of Henry’s Liquor store on Yaldhurst Rd, Sockburn, after the burglary.

Yesterday, two people raided the store after smashing their way in with a silver Nissan Primera, before a second car pulled up and alcohol was loaded in, a statement from police said.

‘‘When police arrived at the scene, the Nissan was still running, parked in the store,’’ the statement said.

The Nissan was stolen from a Riccarton property on Sunday, police said.

Shattered glass filled the floor and forecourt and top-shelf bottles of whisky teetered from shelves at the liquor store.

‘‘The scene examination has taken place and police are making further inquiries into the matter,’’ the statement said.

Yesterday afternoon, a police spokeswoman said that no arrests had been made in relation to all three of the burglaries, but police were following several lines of inquiry.

‘‘Part of the police investigation will be establishing whether there are any links,’’ she said.
