Baby dies in city

Police are investigating the death of a 6-month-old baby in central Christchurch. Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said officers were called to a property on Fitzgerald Ave about 5am yesterday. ‘‘The police team have been working through this sad event and it has been difficult for those attending.’’ A St John spokesman said the baby died because of a medical event. Sweeney said police were liaising with the coroner. ‘‘The immediate family are being supported and the investigation will continue in the coming days,’’ Sweeney said.
