All the kit for adventurers (and their dogs)

One of the things that makes Christchurch-based outdoor retailer Further Faster different is that it is run by owner-operator enthusiasts who have been in the game for decades.

It is an independent wholesaler and retailer focused on quality equipment compared with some better-known outdoor chains where fashion clothing is a more significant part of the offering.

Based in modest premises in Sydenham, Further Faster owners Marty (Rocky) Walker and Dan Farber specialise in the full outdoor range including more ’’technical’’ equipment for hardout race event competitors.

A quirky line is the dog outdoor range of Ruffwear harnesses, packs, leads, collars, toys and sleeping bags and mats. For the owners, there are packs, camping gear, clothing, climbing equipment, kayaks, accessories and paddle gear.

As an independent stockist, Further Faster also supplies some other shops around New Zealand as well as selling direct to the public and online.

‘‘People said we couldn’t do it but we have done it,’’ Farber said.

They bring an international perspective because Walker is from Yorkshire and Farber is from the US.

Walker has experience in outdoor marketing and Farber has worked as a whitewater raft guide. Both have enjoyed climbing, tramping, and kayaking.

Since setting up business in New Zealand they have operated an online service, but their aim in opening the Buchan St store was to create a community of adventure seekers.

They have embraced online social media as an integral part of their marketing and they sponsor several local sports events such as the Crater Rim Ultra.

Every Friday they make a small ‘‘Beer O’clock’’ movie review for their Facebook page on which they showcase an outdoor product and a beer from local breweries including Altitude, Three Boys and Boss Brewing garage project.

‘‘Finding a suitable property where you can wholesale and fit in all the gear including the kayaks was a big challenge. Central city rents in the new buildings are too high for the space we could get,’’ Walker said.

The pair are looking to increase staff numbers as they expand.

They stock numerous high-end equipment brands including Aarn Packs, Montane, Peak UK and Long Cloud Kayaks.
