From tiny houses to floating houses
I like the tiny house idea for the red zone. How about house boats ? Canals would be a perfect fit for the East in amongst the flax and alongside the cycle/walkways. Earthquake comes and they just bob up and down. Worst case tsunami scenario you relocate to Rolleston.

Red-zone natives
With regard to the planting of native trees in the red zones, why were so many mature trees ripped out when houses were cleared? I continue to refuse to revisit Southshore partly because a pohutukawa I had tended on the estuary edge for 20 years was unnecessarily destroyed. This would have incurred a large fine under different circumstances. Betty Pearson

Offensive, not funny
Al Nisbet’s cartoon was disgraceful. Australia’s offshore detention centres are clearcut cases of human rights abuse. Real people are desperately suffering. Nisbet portrayed them as rabid animals. The offer to bring some of them here is a pragmatic way to make a meaningful difference. Clumsy advocacy for continued human rights abuses should have no place in The Press. Matthew Amos Riccarton
