The best cafes to sip and surf

- ❚ Discover more neat places around town at neatplaces.co.nz and download the free and offline Neat Places smartphone app.

It’s a necessity in homes, workplaces and increasingly in public spaces, but wi-fi connections in cafes, bars and restaurants can be few and far between.

Neat Places has hunted out the handful of Christchurch establishments which have added the service to their menus.

C4

Not only the godfathers of good coffee in Christchurch, C4 knows caffeine goes well with a side of ultra fast broadband. Connect to the web while perched at the bar leaner or sitting at the ample tables or sofa at C4’s mid-town warehouse-cum-roastery. Don’t be fooled by its industrial look – large machinery, concrete floors and high ceilings – this is one cosy place to park up for a brew, some food and some free wi-fi. Whether you choose the street side tables, store-front sofas or tables down the back, C4 is an ideal place to stop, sit and scroll.

Welles St

Once again proving its versatility, this new bar on the block is an ideal venue to park up for a work, study or web-surfing session. The huge interior makes it easy to find a quiet spot, and the diverse menu covers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Feel connected to more than the internet with outdoor seating in the sheltered courtyard, or head inside to one of the bar leaners or large tables. Whether it’s barista coffee, craft beer or wine in your glass, it will always feel half full at Welles St.

The Anchorage

Large tables, heaters to keep you cosy, and some of the best coffee in town to fuel your focus: it is no surprise there is a keen following of laptop-toting locals at The Anchorage. Grizzly Bagels, Cakes By Anna cakes and Pure Cafe Co sweet treats are complemented by a repertoire of food trucks to keep you nourished beyond the extensive range of expertly roasted-on-site Sailor’s Son coffee. Changing artists’ works adorn the walls for added vibrancy, and a large roller door ensures the space is flooded with light and is cosy on chillier days. Bringing an exciting Melburnian feel to the industrial edge of Christchurch’s city centre, The Anchorage has a laidback, welcoming vibe stronger than its wi-fi signal.

The Origin

This St Albans cafe has more than just an admirable vegan menu, specialty teas and coffees: it also has unlimited wi-fi. Bringing pristine interiors, a tranquil vibe and a deliciously eclectic menu to the neighbourhood, The Origin is a great place to escape busy-to-thebrim city haunts. The Origin’s Scandinavian feel is ideal for decluttering your mind before you sit down for a spell online. The sleek and sophisticated fit-out is complemented by an interesting animal product-free menu and cabinet offerings, as well as micro-roasted coffee and a selection of nut mylks.

Little High Eatery

Take your pick from the smorgasbord of work, study or web-surfing snacks on offer at the coolest inner city food court. The busy hub is open nearly all day and night and has seating aplenty in booths, tables or bar seats. Little High is all about options for its customers, and internet connection is no different – it’s available through Little High’s portal, plus another provided by the Christchurch City Council. Home to the famous Bacon Bros, Eightgrains dumplings, Sushi Soldier and others, Little High is always busy, making it the perfect spot for people-watching.
