McIntyre impresses with bat and ball for Halswell Hornets

Halswell Hornets kingpin Lucy McIntyre – the Canterbury women’s softball premiershi­p’s first round standout – has backed up with another winning all-round display.

The former Southlande­r was the top batter in the first round with a .600 average, joint leading pitcher with clubmate Jenni Mumm with a 0.00 earned run average and shared the lead in the RBIs (runs batted in) stakes with Halswell veteran Nicole WarrenBaxt­er.

McIntyre scored two runs and collected two safe hits in Halswell’s 4-1 win over Kaiapoi at Mizuno Ballpark on Saturday.

She also held her opponents to one safe hit (to Kaiapoi hurler Lauren Sutherland) while nabbing four strikeouts.

Halswell scored three runs in the fourth inning and added the insurance when Liyah Faga-Leti smashed a triple to score McIntyre in the seventh.

The PCU Angels edged out Papanui 2-1 at Papanui Domain in a game the home side let slip.

Papanui outbatted the Angels by seven safe hits to three, but left 10 runners on base and

American catcher Allyne Clark scored for PCU in the first and sixth innings with errors allowing her to scamper home.

Papanui’s Steph Kepa proved why she is still one of Canterbury’s more dangerous batters with three hits from four attempts off PCU’s import pitcher Paige Crawford. Crawford racked up 10 strikeouts while yielding four walks.

Kepa clouted a triple and Courtney Spooner a double as Papanui beat Sydenham Kereru 5-0. Shortstop Krystal Werahiko had six hits for SK.

Meanwhile, the Halswell Hornets celebrated a 8-1 win over Albion in the men’s premiershi­p with a six-run burst in the sixth inning after hits to Ariki Tuhoro, Kieran Nation, Aaron Collier and Jaydin Law.

Collier, the Halswell playercoac­h, and Marty Warren had two hits each for the Hornets.

Connor Flynn scored Albion’s only run with a home run in the fourth inning.

Halswell’s teenage pitcher Jontae MacDonald only gave up one other hit as he totted up eight strikeouts.

Back-to-back home run blasts by Nopera Stockford and Bailey Hamilton set up the PCU Devils’ 8-6 win over Halswell.

The double dingers came in the first inning and proved the difference in an otherwise even contest.

Tuhoro hit a homer for Halswell and Collier and Mitch Burrows slammed triples.

Burrows batted 1.000 after adding two singles and a double.

Stockford also had the perfect average for PCU with his automatic home run and two other hits.

Canterbury Red Sox slugger Jackson Watt had three hits from four in Papanui’s 8-5 victory over Albion.

Black Sox infielder Tyron Bartorillo hit a two-bagger for the Tigers and young catcher Josh Lubiejewsk­i went two from three at the plate.
