Canty women beaten in final
The Canterbury women’s golf team were unable to contain the powerful Auckland side in the final of the national interprovincial golf championships losing 4-1 at Sherwood Park in Northland yesterday.
It was Auckland’s fifth title in the past six seasons with the streak only broken by Canterbury winning at Ashburton two years ago.
Canterbury had qualified for the final accounting for North Harbour 3-2 in one semi-final while Auckland downed Bay of Plenty 4-1 in the other.
The red and black team did well to make the final missing two of their line-up from last season, Amelia Garvey and Hillary O’Connor, to leave several debutants. Against Harbour, Canterbury’s top three recorded wins while the bottom duo lost but it was No3 Catherine Bell who tipped the scales in Canterbury’s favour when she went to the 19th hole to win after being all square at 18.
No1 Juliana Hung won 4 and
3 and Olive Tapu 4 and 3 while Jessica Crosbie lost 5 and 4 and Maddie May 4 and 3.
In the final only Hung was successful was a strong 4 and 3 win against Rosie Zheng.
The others were on the receiving end, although Tapu fought hard losing only 2 and 1, with their inexperience exposed.
The Canterbury men were just pipped by Hawkes Bay for a semi-final spot after section play ended yesterday. Canterbury shared their match with Otago 21⁄2-21⁄2 in the morning before thumping Southland 4-1 in the afternoon. But it was not quite enough as Hawkes Bay took second on 171⁄2 games to Canterbury’s 17. Unbeaten North Harbour topped the division and play Waikato while Auckland meet Hawkes Bay in the semis.
