Christchurch: The city of sculpture?

-

I note that the Lonely Planet giude has named Christchurch one of the world’s best cities for street art. Wow that’s fantastic and let’s keep it coming. I also see we have many outdoor sculptures, another great addition to street art.

How about renaming our ‘the ‘garden city’ ‘the city of sculpture’ and so create a new modern brand to identify with our post earthquake image that positions us globally as much more exciting than a colonial outpost of mother England with lovely gardens.

We could have annual sculpture exhibitions and invite artists to create great new street art and make a prize out of it by having the best works displayed prominently around the city. I am sure there would be many other opportunities to promote our city as a place for great art. The council is looking for more events for the city so a let’s create our own new event around art. Please no flaxes

Did anyone else feel the irony in designer James Lunday’s desires for ‘‘a Square with its eyes on the future not the past’’? He would like it to be, ‘‘a modern Kiwi living room for the city’’ and not a ‘‘Victorian front parlour.’’ The really sad thing is that by now we could have had an inspirational, light-filled, majestic new cathedral as the Square’s centrepiece. The idea for lawns and trees around the cathedral is wonderful but, please, not cabbage trees and flax. Jane Blackman Riccarton
