Jockey taken to Dunedin hospital

- MAT KERMEEN

Three jockeys appear to have come through scary falls at Tuesday’s Boxing Day meeting at Wingatui, near Dunedin, free of any serious injuries.

Veteran jockey Terry Moseley fell from Troy Boy in the home straight in race four and Gosen Jogoo and Krish Gundowry fell from Tenfold and Queen Serene in the last race of the day. Race day falls are not uncommon but to have two at one venue on the same day is a rarity.

Several heavy showers fell at Wingatui during the day but it is not yet known if conditions played a role in the two falls.

The incidents at Wingatui’s Boxing Day meeting come just three days after Central Districts jockey Leah Hemi was knocked unconscious at Awapuni following a nasty fall on Saturday.

Racing Integrity Unit stipendiary steward Mark Davidson confirmed Terry Moseley had been transferred to hospital by ambulance for observation and concussion testing. Moseley was stood down for the remainder of the day and has also been ruled out of Thursday’s South Canterbury Racing Club meeting.

Davidson confirmed Moseley was conscious when he left the track and all indications were that he had escaped any serious injury but said all safety precautions were being taken.

He also confirmed there are some concerns Moseley may have a hand or thumb injury and he also had some soreness in his right shoulder.

Jogoo and Gundowry were able to walk back to the jockeys room unassisted and Davidson confirmed neither jockey was injured. Queen Serene fell as the field rounded the turn into the home straight and Tenfold, who had nowhere to go, fell over the top of Queen Serene.

Troy Boy, Queen Serene and Tenfold all escaped their incidents free of serious injury.

The feature race the Allied Security Hazlett Stakes, was won by the John and Karen Parsons-trained Starvoia, in the hands of Chris Johnson, by a nose over the fast-finishing Timy Tyler. Further victories aboard Sensei and Patrick Erin gave Johnson three wins on the eight-race card.
