Several injured in street brawl

- MADDISON NORTHCOTT

At least three people were taken to hospital, one with serious injuries, after a street brawl broke out in central Christchurch early yesterday morning.

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to reports of a fight on St Asaph St, near the intersection with Manchester St, about 2.30am.

Three people were taken to Christchurch Hospital, two with moderate injuries and one with serious injuries.

Two were released later yesterday morning.

‘‘It’s possible a knife or some sort of weapon was used, but we can’t say for sure at this stage,’’ the spokeswoman said.

Several other people were arrested at the scene for fighting.

Details of what had happened were still unclear, and the area had been blocked off by police as they attempted to piece together what sparked the altercation.

Diversions were in place and traffic could not travel west on St Asaph St between Manchester and Colombo streets.

Shortly after, a person was knocked unconscious in a seemingly unrelated fight on the corner of Colombo and Welles streets.

‘‘It’s possible a knife or some sort of weapon was used . . .’’
