Home DIY: Make a pebble placemat

-

These pebble placemats are the perfect accessory for any style of table setting.

For a rustic, country look, pair the placemat with wooden accents and soft, earthy tones.

Wanting a coastal look? Add handmade ceramic tableware and linen napkins. For a simple Scandinavian theme, use metallic accents and neutral colours.

This DIY isn’t just limited to placemats. You can use the same technique to create smaller coasters, longer table runners or even a mat for pot plants or a candle collection.

You might try smaller pebbles for a coaster and larger pebbles for a mat.

EQUIPMENT

❚ 3-5 bags pebbles (any colour pebbles will work – polished black stones are a great alternative – but choosing the smoothest, flattest stones is the key to ensuring your plates sit evenly)

❚ 6 plastic stationery sleeves or sheets of white cardboard or cork mats (if you want a sturdier placemat)

❚ Craft knife

❚ Hot glue

❚ Hot glue gun

METHOD

Arrange pebbles on plastic sleeves. Make sure they sit closely together and as flat as possible.

Either follow the line of plastic sheet/cardboard/cork mat, or create an organic shape.

Fire up the hot glue gun and glue each pebble on to the plastic sheet (or white cardboard if using). If you’ve chosen to alternate the outline of your placemat, use your craft knife to cut away the plastic sheet/cardboard/cork mat where there are no pebbles.

You can use the same technique to create smaller coasters, longer table runners or even a mat for pot plants or a candle collection.
