Home DIY: make a woollen wall hanging

-

An update on the 70s-style textile wall hangings have made a comeback lately.

If the intricate technique of macrame knots goes over your head, then this simple knotted wall hanging is one to try.

To choose your colours first pick the dominant hue you want to feature, then choose a secondary colour to complement this.

A few other tertiary colours are a good idea to add visual contrast.

If you’re wanting to add a bit of interest to your wall hanging, vary the type of material you use.

Add some thicker wool, ripped cotton or even string up feathers on a piece of thread and add them on to the rod at various points.

EQUIPMENT

❚ 3 - 4 balls of thick wool (or as many colours as you want to include)

❚ 1 wooden rod/moulding

❚ Scissors

❚ Ruler

METHOD

Cut thick wool into lengths. We recommend just under a metre for each strand.

(Note: the wool will need to be twice as long as you want it to hang because you will knot it in half, but don’t worry too much about the length yet, you’ll trim it up later.)

Tie each strip around the wooden rod using a hitch knot. Remember to switch colours as you move along to add variety and interest. Once the rod has enough wool on it, trim the length with scissors. We used a ruler to cut the wool on a sharp diagonal, but be creative, you could also try an asymmetric cut or just straight across.

Attach a length of wool to either end of the rod to hang.

If you're wanting to add a bit of interest to your wall hanging, vary the type of material you use.
