Munro blazes again

- IAN ANDERSON

Black Caps opener Colin Munro fed a bulging bakery of pies in his side’s Twenty20 international against the West Indies in Mt Maunganui on Monday night.

Munro feasted eagerly on some terrible deliveries from the visiting bowlers as New Zealand dictated initial terms.

He reached 66 off 22 balls before he spooned the 23rd to long-on as the hosts continued to run the roost over a team they’ve beaten in six consecutive matches over three different formats this summer.

After making 53 off 48 balls in the opening match of the T20 series in Nelson on Saturday, Munro took full advantage of some horribly inconsistent bowling to plunder 11 fours and three sixes at Bay Oval. He reached his half-century off 18 balls – the second-fastest for New Zealand in T20s, behind his own record of 14 deliveries – and was then dropped next ball.

. West Indies did remove Martin Guptill in the opening over – from another poor delivery – and skipper Carlos Brathwaite produced the catch of the year when he flung himself to his right to snare a onehanded screamer to remove Tom Bruce.

But the hosts were still wonderfully placed at 102-4 after nine overs – with captain Kane Williamson 17 not out of 15 balls – when the light rain, which had delayed the start by 20 minutes, returned heavier and the players left the field.
