Body found in river

The body of a local 56-year-old man was found by tourists in the Maitai river in central Nelson. Police have identified him but his name won’t be released until his next of kin have been notified. His death is not being treated as suspicious, and has been referred to the coroner. His body was discovered at a popular swimming spot known as Girlie’s Hole by a pair of tourists about 1:15pm yesterday afternoon. Indications were he had been swimming in the waterhole near Nile St, just east of the CBD, a police spokeswoman said.
