Baby news makes global headlines

-

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s pregnancy has created waves worldwide, with news sites across the globe running with the story.

CNN splashed with ‘‘Prime Minister and a MUM’’ . The American news site, like many other media outlets, made mention that our PM would take six weeks off and her partner, Clarke Gayford, would be a stay-at-home dad.

HuffPost also went with ‘‘I’ll be a Prime Minister and a mum’’. It quoted Ardern as saying: ‘‘I think it’s fair to say that this will be a wee one that a village will raise, but we couldn’t be more excited.’’

‘‘At the end of my [parental] leave I will resume all Prime Ministerial duties.’’

Australia’s ABC News took the same approach. The news site went on to mention Ardern had previously been ‘‘quizzed about motherhood’’ when she was first elected as the Labour Party leader.

‘‘I’ve been really open about that dilemma because I think probably lots of women face it,’’ she said at the time.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Morning Herald focused on Ardern and Gayford revealing they were unsure they ‘‘would be able to have children without help’’.

‘‘We’re both really happy. We wanted a family but weren’t sure it would happen for us, which has made this news unexpected but exciting,’’ she said.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull posted a congratulatory note on Twitter.

The Associated Press news agency also highlighted previous speculation about whether Ardern would start a family soon, and made mention that Ardern posted the announcement via Twitter.

The Guardian mentioned that Ardern’s morning sickness ‘‘had made keeping the secret ‘a little tricky’,’’ but otherwise so far the pregnancy symptoms had not been ‘‘too bad’’.

It went on to say Ardern did not predict her Government would have to adapt to much to her baby ‘‘except for the cabinet cars installing baby seats’’.

The Telegraph also picked up the story. Its headline reading: ‘‘New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announces pregnancy, revealing she found out just days before her surprise election’’.
