Hubbards recalls breakfast favourite

- ANUJA NADKARNI

Hubbards has recalled its toasted muesli after failing to declare almonds and cashews in its list of allergens.

The cereal company has recalled its Simply Toasted Muesli Original, with the best before dates November 13, 2018, and November 14, 2018.

Hubbards marketing manager Rebecca Bergs said the presence of the undeclared allergens was brought to the company’s attention via a customer complaint.

Bergs said all customers that had bought the recalled muesli would receive a refund.

This recall came just months after Hellers recalled a batch of its Huttons Smallgoods brand Sizzlers original flavour due to the undeclared presence of milk.

In November, Gluten Free Holdings also recalled its multigrain and Pavillion chia seed breads due to the presence of gluten.

Foodstuffs spokeswoman Antoinette Laird said as soon as the business received notification from the supplier the supermarket took action on recalling the products.

‘‘It is not uncommon for product recalls to occur, and the reasons why are wide and varied,’’ she said.

‘‘Food recalls are a sign that the relevant food safety protocols and systems are working correctly – at no time do we want products to be consumed that may be less than the highest quality or put consumers at risk.’’

Progressive Enterprises, the owner of Countdown, SuperValue and FreshChoice supermarkets, has also recalled wine bottles on behalf of Warburn Estate Wines as there is a risk of the bottles breaking when opened.

The affected bottles are Rumours’ Moscato and Pinot Grigio vintage 2017 wines and Gossips’ Moscato Sweet Lips and Pink Moscato vintage 2017.

The recalls did not affect any other batches of these wines. Progressive Enterprises said in its notice of recall that there had been no reports of injury, although it encourages concerned consumers to seek medical advice if they had consumed the product.

A spokeswoman for Countdown said the recall process was overseen by the Ministry for Primary Industries.

‘‘Food safety is our first priority. Recalls do happen from time to time and generally are a precautionary measure by suppliers.’’
