City’s east frame no more

- MICHAEL HAYWARD

Christchurch’s central-city east frame housing development has a new name: One Central.

By 2026, about 900 townhouses will be built in the 14-hectare block of land bordered by Madras, Manchester and Lichfield streets and the Avon River, with work on the first 20 on Hereford St having started last May. They are expected to be finished in September.

Fletcher Living is building them as part of an $800 million contract. The Crown acquired the land and Crown company O¯ ta¯ karo has built public facilities for the project, such as the $30m Rauora Park, a 660-metre-long public space that runs through One Central from south to north.

The name One Central has been given to the Fletcher’s housing development, but not the surrounding public spaces.

A Fletcher Living spokeswoman said One Central was chosen because it was ‘‘simple, descriptive yet evocative name’’, which clearly pinpointed the central-city location and reflected ‘‘connectedness’’.

She said the east frame was always a working title and a name was needed to provide a unique identity for the development.

An O¯ ta¯ karo spokesman said the first homes were taking shape and having a name for the development ‘‘just builds on that progress’’.

As well as the 20 homes expected to be finished in September, civil and ground work is under way at corner of Madras and Lichfield streets, where 94 homes will be built. Consents have been lodged for another lot, with work expected to start in autumn.

Between the three sites, work is expected to be under way on 173 units priced from $400,000 to $1.4 million by the end of the year.

Fletcher Living is also developing the 110-unit Atlas Quarter on Welles St and a 76-unit development at 350 Colombo St.

The spokeswoman said 96 units at the Atlas Quarter were close to completion, with some already on the market, ranging from $366,000 to $690,000. At 350 Colombo St, work is under way on five of the six planned buildings, with prices to be confirmed.
