Charter school closures could cost govt up to $15m
If the Government needs to terminate any of the contracts with the existing eleven charter schools and the four due to open next year, it could cost up to $15 million. Education Minister Chris Hipkins has legislation to repeal charter schools and the Ministry of Education is currently working with each school on a case-by-case basis to see if they can transition to another model. If any of the schools don’t then they will get compensated for the termination by up to $1m.
