Don’t replicate Tennyson St cycleway
AM Hale finds Tennyson St’s cycleway implementation ideal (Letters, Feb 14), but I think it is one of the worst and I hope the council never builds another like it. Let me explain why: For those who don’t know, Tennyson St goes footpath, grass and trees, cycle lane, gutter, parking then road lane.
My first experience of this road was a car reversing out of a driveway into my path.
Other experiences include trying to overtake slower cyclists and negotiating dreamy pedestrians who think the cycle lane is an additional footpath.
Overtaking is extremely risky as some slower cyclists do not track a straight path and a wander as you pass may result in visiting a gutter.
Also, passengers opening their car doors do so into the path of cyclists.
As a commuter cyclist who, like many others, travels at 30kmh+, this is a dangerous place to be, so I generally avoid this cycleway or ride on the road.
I feel for car drivers who see very large sums being spent on cycleways while the potholes grow.
I don’t understand why the cheapest option which avoids all these problems, the original on-road cycle lane system, has not been used wherever possible and done properly. Cases like Barrington St where the lane transitions into car parking need to be corrected. Geoffrey Mentink Huntsbury
