Fan wins $50k with lucky catch

- IAN ANDERSON

Hamilton’s Rudi Bosman will be able to give his accountancy students a memorable lecture today.

Bosman won $50,000 in the Tui Catch a Million competition at Hamilton’s Seddon Park last night when he did just that during England’s innings against New Zealand in the Twenty20 tri-series match. ‘‘I’ll tell them about investments and dividends - it’s a pretty decent return on your investment,’’ the Wintec lecturer said.

‘‘If I’ve got my choice, probably put it down for a deposit on the house. I’m sure the wife’s already spending some of it at home - we’ll see when I get there.’’

England’s Dawid Malan slammed part-time Black Caps medium pacer Colin Munro over wide long on in the ninth over of the match and it stuck in Bosman’s right hand as he stood on the grass hill.

Bosman said he saw his catch ‘‘all the way, very focused’’ after making a tactical decision where to sit.

‘‘When we came in, we were sitting higher up the bank first. After discussing it, we said ‘I don’t think it’s going to carry all the way up there, let’s move down’.’’

Bosman, who moved to New Zealand from his native South Africa 12 years ago, was the third $50,000 winner this summer and the second in three days.

Barely 48 hours earlier, Victoria University student Mitchell Grimstone, 20, hit the jackpot with a catch at Eden Park during the match against Australia.

Dunedin builder Craig Dougherty was the first to become $50,000 richer, taking a one-hander in the one-day international against Pakistan on January 13.

The promotion runs throughout the home summer at every Black Caps limited overs international, with just one $50,000 prize on offer per match.
