A chance for Cantabrians to reciprocate

-

Yet another natural disaster has wreaked havoc in the Pacific, with parts of Tonga devastated by Cyclone Gita.

I am reminded of an extraordinary act of generosity by the people of Tonga, a nation with a population of 110,00, shortly after the September 2010 Canterbury earthquake. At the time, The Press reported that Tongans donated $630,000 to the people of Canterbury. The money was raised through radiothons, street appeals and a government donation.

As news of the cyclone damage in Tonga as well as Samoa and Fiji fades from the media, I hope that Cantabrians will remember this act of generosity and consider donating money to Cyclone Gita relief efforts. Wayne Morriss Huntsbury Almighty surge in wild weather New Zealand and the rest of the world is experiencing more severe weather more frequently, according to Climate Change Minister James Shaw.

Could it be that the Architect of the Universe is trying to get our attention because we have forsaken him? King Solomon recorded these words from the Almighty when he became the wisest and richest king to ever live: ‘‘If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.’’ (2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV)

May New Zealand remember the Almighty who gave us this tranquil land and Jesus Christ who died for us.

Also my prayers are that Cyclone Gita will be less severe than predicted and that people will be safe. Jonathan Rumens Woolston
