Come on Labour, show us the money

The city’s heritage buildings mothballed (Feb 20) mentioned some hefty numbers: $204 million needed to fix the provincial chambers, $254 million for the proposed multi-use stadium. The number not mentioned was the $300 million the Labour Party promised Christchur­ch during the election.

On September 6, the Christchur­ch Central candidates’ debate was held. The now MP Duncan Webb promised $300m to the city. When questioned from the floor about the applicatio­n process for the funds, he answered ‘‘no strings attached’’ – just vote for Labour. Well Duncan, is your word your web, were you spinning a sticky yarn to catch unsuspecti­ng voters? Scream it with me Christchur­ch, Show Me the Money. Warren Taylor Merivale Public cathedral donations Now it is definite the Cathedral is going to be rebuilt, would it be an opportune time to set up on site facilities so visitors are able to donate/contribute – a la Saint Oswald’s stone church at Wharanui? Over the years since the quakes many thousands of people would have surveyed the sad looking cathedral and thought, ‘I wish I could help by donating’ but there wasn’t any facility there to enable that to happen, suggesting a huge opportunit­y has been lost which could have amounted to a huge sum.

The same could be applied to the important heritage buildings that are being mothballed for several years because of the lack of funding, but isn’t it great these building aren’t going to be demolished like so many others that are now lost for ever. John D Broughton Opawa
