Spurious ‘Netf lix’ bills hit bank’s customers
A woman’s bank account billed her for Netflix – the only trouble was she didn’t have a subscription.
The ANZ customer, of Napier, was one of a number of the bank’s customers whose accounts were hit by a bogus transaction from ‘‘Netflix.Com.’’
She warned others on Facebook about the bill, which used the name of the popular movie and television show streaming service.
‘‘ANZ customers. Check your bank accounts. I checked mine today and there was a withdrawal from Netflix.Com.
‘‘So check. Get hold of the bank. They will refund you if you have been affected, and cancel [your] card and send a new one. Beware out there!’’ the post read. The woman was approached for comment.
It was unclear whether the bill originated from Netflix, or whether it came from a person or organisation falsely claiming to represent it.
ANZ was unable to say how many New Zealand customers were impacted by the bogus bill for security reasons, only saying it was ‘‘a small number’’.
While most of the suspect transactions were reversed automatically, some customers contacted ANZ and made arrangements for their cards to be replaced.
‘‘We are monitoring customer accounts for any suspicious activity,’’ the spokesman said.
He stressed no customer would be out of pocket over the bogus transactions.
Kiwibank customer Daryl Dobby-Smith said he was struck by a ‘‘Netflix scam’’ in February.
Netflix has been approached for comment.
