It would appear, at least to one ancient Presbyteri­an, that Bishop Victoria Matthews has failed one of life’s many tests – that of being gracious in defeat.

Whether she won or lost the seven-year religious war in Christchur­ch, would it not have been better instead of her spiteful final message to her subjects for the Bishop to have thrown off her cardboard hat, pulled out a pair of gardening gloves and invited her congregati­on to join her in the square on Sunday afternoon to tidy up the site before she departed.
