Dice rolls for casino workers

- Chris Hutching chris.hutching@stuff.co.nz

Luck may have run out for some staff at the Christchurch Casino.

Chief executive Brett Anderson announced a ‘‘proposition for change’’ to them yesterday.

Anderson said the proposed changes were open for consultation until month’s end.

Without being specific, Anderson acknowledged that casino visitor numbers had yet to recover from the decline after the 2011 earthquakes.

‘‘But I’m not prepared to talk about job numbers. There are no targets.’’

Anderson said new centralcity developments such as the convention centre were eagerly awaited.

‘‘It’s been a tough environment for many people.’’

The casino had benefited from taking part in the sponsorship of the recent Golden Oldies events.

Anderson declined to comment on a report from an unnamed source that 20 jobs might be under consideration. The casino employs about 490 people.

Christchurch Casinos is owned by Queenstown-based Skyline Enterprises which revealed some information in its last annual report.

Even though attendance may be lower than before 2011, the casino remains highly profitable.

Skyline’s annual report shows that gaming revenue hit $62 million last year and most of it came from the Christchurch Casino.

Skyline also owns 33 per cent of the smaller Dunedin Casino, also included within the figure.
