Is this the next Lorde?
Lorde. Crowded House. OMC. Izzy Read? Canterbury teenager Izzy Read could become New Zealand’s next big music star after she was offered a place at a selective British music school, one of only three international students to earn a spot.
The 14-year-old said she cried when she heard she had been accepted into The BRIT School in London, known for its creative curriculum and celebrity alumni.
‘‘Music is the only thing that I’m really passionate about. There is nothing else that sticks out to me as what I really want to do,’’ Izzy said.
Award-winning singers Adele and Amy Winehouse came through the school’s music programme, as did Jessie J and Leona Lewis. The school’s founder was inspired by the 1980s film Fame about a high school based around performing arts.
‘‘We went to see Adele last year and I got so inspired. She is amazing and I wanted to know where she went to school and I found out it was the BRIT School,’’ she said.
Just 10 per cent of BRIT School students are selected from outside the Greater London area. Only two or three students worldwide, Izzy included, were chosen to attend the music strand she would start in August.
‘‘I had to send in an application and an essay before they invited me over to do an audition. We went over there and I did a theory test, a performance and an interview,’’ she said.
In front of a panel, Izzy sang You’re My World by Cilla Black, a song she said represented her love of older music and showcased her voice.
Izzy’s mother, Christina Low, said her daughter also submitted music she had written and composed herself.
‘‘When she was very young she could listen to a song and list all the instruments, so we started her on singing lessons. It was then the teacher said she had perfect pitch, so we started planning,’’ Low said.
Acceptance was on the condition she was accompanied by a parent. Low said they were committed to making the most of the opportunity. ‘‘One of us will move with her initially, and the other will follow once we have matters here dealt with,’’ Low said.
