South Island kids sent on ‘the time of their life’

- Adam Bradley

Two dozen South Island children can go on the trip of lifetime thanks to a $100,000 donation from a local charity.

Last year, Koru Care Christchurch had to cancel its annual trip for children with disabilities or terminal illnesses due to lack of funds.

Koru Care chairman Chris George said it ‘‘had become increasingly difficult to fundraise after the earthquakes’’, and last year’s cancellation was the first in the charity’s 32-year history.

‘‘Even with the help of our major corporate sponsors it still couldn’t go ahead,’’ he said.

After The Press published news of the trip being cancelled, the Riccarton Rotary Youth Trust offered Koru Care $100,000 to ensure it happened this year.

Twenty-four children aged 9 to 15, from Canterbury, the West Coast and Marlborough left Christchurch Airport for Los Angeles on Monday.

The children have a range of serious conditions, including cancer, cerebral palsy, juvenile arthritis and renal issues.

‘‘Air New Zealand cabin crew all dress as Disney characters and superheroes for the flight to Los Angeles – this makes it a special flight for the other passengers too. Everyone is in for the ride,’’ George said. ‘‘This is a chance for these kids to have the time of their life.’’

The children will visit California theme parks including Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knottsberry Farm and Soak City over 13 days.

‘‘Koru Care Christchurch provides special experiences for children with serious and often ongoing medical conditions,’’ George said.
