Sitak, Venus march on

-

Kiwi Michael Venus has joined fellow New Zealander Artem Sitak in the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles.

Venus and his South African partner Raven Klaasen beat Leonardo Mayer, of Argentina, and Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-3 7-6 6-7 6-7 6-3 yesterday, just a few hours after Sitak and Divij Sharan, of India, completed an epic 1-6 6-7 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory.

That win was over Jonathan Erlic, of Israel, and Poland’s Marcin Matkowski.

It’s the first time Sitak has made it to the quarterfinals of a grand slam and he’ll mark it down as another special moment in his career.

‘‘It feels great, especially doing it at Wimbledon, my favourite grand slam,’’ Sitak said.

‘‘I’m not going to be able to enjoy it for too long because we’re scheduled to play tomorrow, so we’ll need to get as much rest as possible and get ready for it.’’

Sitak and Sharan will be up against two big names of tennis in Jack Sock and Mike Bryan in the quarterfinals, which will be played on show court No 3.
