Living every mother’s nightmare

- Sam Sherwood sam.sherwood@stuff.co.nz

The mother of a teen in hospital after he and his friend were hit by a car says receiving the news is the ‘‘last thing a mother wants to hear’’.

Isaak Strom, 14, and Jonathan Krupinski, 13, were struck outside Strom’s house on Oxford Rd, at Fernside, inland from Rangiora, about 9.20pm on Saturday.

They remain in Christchurch Hospital.

Police earlier said the driver of the car did not appear to be a fault.

Krupinski’s mother, Sarah Schwartz, told Stuff she had barely slept since her son had been admitted to hospital.

‘‘I allowed my boy Jono to spend a night at his friend’s [house], then I received a call around 10 saying he had been hit by a car right outside their house. [It’s] the last thing a mother wants to hear after allowing their child to spend a night out at a mate’s.’’

The teen’s aunty, Chrystal Steiner, created a Givealittle page for Krupinski. The page says he sustained ‘‘significant injuries’’.

‘‘He has broken both of his legs, with one break being close to his artery, depending how surgery goes, he may need a blood transfusion.

‘‘He has a broken pelvis, along with fluid in his abdomen.’’

Krupinski is a keen basketball player and ‘‘athletic young soul’’ who will need all the support he can get, Steiner wrote.

The page was set up in the hope of raising enough money for Krupinski’s parents to be at his bedside.

‘‘Once Jonathan is out from hospital, he will be in a wheelchair for some time, along with needing his toileting needs, hygiene needs all to be taken care of as well as the process of recovery.’’

Strom’s earlier told mother, Cath Strom, Stuff her son was in a stable condition and remained in the intensive care unit.

She did not know what caused the crash: ‘‘He was hit by a car outside our house, that’s all I know.’’

Cath Strom had also created Givealittle page for her son.

‘‘Isaak is in ICU with a brain injury and his recovery is going to be long and slow.

‘‘As Isaak’s parents, we need and want to be by his side and with no income coming in this will be hard.’’

All money raised would be spent on

ahis recovery and any expenses allow the family to stay by his side.

Senior Sergeant Matt Emery said the driver stopped at the scene and did not appear to be at fault at this stage. ‘‘From what we understand two pedestrians were on the road in a really poorly lit, dark area, and the driver has unexpectedly come across these boys on the road.

‘‘How and why they’ve been there, we don’t know yet.’’
