Local tavern looks to family dining

-

As far as taverns go, The Peg is an absolute classic. Welcoming and unpretentious to the point it’s almost trendy, the Main North Rd mainstay has an original air that should appeal to anyone with a yearning for how things used to be.

But get in quick because even at this historic bar the times are a-changin’.

The Peg gained a new owner in April with Dunedin-based hospitality investor Sanjeev Nauhria, who is slowly but surely updating the grand old Belfast Tavern.

There’s the new liquor store out front – the city’s only Black Bull outlet, pledging bargains for everyone’s favourite drop – and inside, the gaming area has been given a boost and multiple raffles introduced.

It’s the food, however, where Nauhria is most excited to see

The Peg advance.

He announced a couple of months ago that the more-than150-year-old Peg would in its latest iteration be known as a barrestaurant, serving food for families and anyone else with a taste for hearty pub cuisine.

A list of meals starting at just

$12.50 was introduced and expanded upon over ensuing weeks. Recently, burgers, chicken schnitzel, ham steak, nachos and a country chicken salad were added to with a steak offering – ribeye or rump – served with two eggs, chips and a fresh green salad.

Now fresh fish is joining the line-up. Available from this week in the tempura-battered fish and chips, it will soon also feature in a special fish dish currently being refined by the kitchen.

‘‘Families can come and enjoy a meal at a very good price. Most of the meals are still only $12.50,’’ Nauhria says.

The selection of fare is wonderfully in keeping with the venue – tasty, comforting, served with a smile and sure to live up to its billing.

A roaring fire keeps a cosy atmosphere on cold nights and there’s always someone keen for a yarn.

Weekly rituals have also been given a lift. Happy hour comes in a double dose from 5pm to 7pm Wednesday through Sunday, games of pool are free on Tuesdays, and a loyalty club for regulars includes bonus gifts as points are accumulated. Meat raffles are held every Thursday and Friday night.

Groups are welcome and bookings are free.

To get guests home safely after a fun night out, a courtesy coach covers the surrounding area.

For a relaxing time and some good old fashioned hospitality, The Peg nails it.

The Peg is open every day at 899 Main North Rd, Belfast. Meals are served 12pm-2pm Tuesday to Thursday and 12pm-8pm Fridays and Saturdays. For details, visit their Facebook page ‘‘The Belfast Tavern - The Peg’’, email blackbullchristchurch@gmail.com or call 03 323 8851.
