Get out with a scooter

-

The first blossom is out and soon there will be more sunny days, fresh green leaves and playful birds as the seasons change and being outdoors becomes that much more enjoyable.

Mobility scooters are a great way to experience spring, offering easy trips to the shops or park, or just around the block to celebrate your independence.

In Christchurch, some of the best options can be found at Wheelchair Scooter Sales/ Service Ltd, a family-run business that supplies the acclaimed Shoprider mobility scooters.

With long-lasting batteries, the scooters can travel up to 50 kilometres between charges depending on model and usage. All are designed for ease of use and a ride that is smooth, stable and comfortable.

Many scooters fold for transporting by car – great when heading out with family – and larger tyres are an option for travelling over grassy terrain.

Wheelchair Scooter Sales/ Service is run by Christine and Gerald Curtis, who also provide full ongoing technical support for people to make the most of their scooters over the long term.

Gerald has more than 30 years’ experience as a disability equipment engineer, and there are sub-agents across the South Island for those outside Christchurch.

Christine says mobility scooters can give people a remarkable degree of independence.

‘‘A lot of people go to mobility scooters after they can’t get their licence renewed and others use them as a second form of transport, taking them down to the shops and saving on gas, then using their car for longer trips,’’ she says. ‘‘They don’t have to wait for other people to take them somewhere, they can just go themselves.’’

Test rides can be arranged at the headquarters of Wheelchair Scooter Sales/ Service, in Parklands, or at a customer’s home.

When delivering scooters, Gerald always spends time with the customer at their home to make sure they are comfortable and confident with its use.

Wheelchairs, walkers and other support equipment are also supplied by the company, with many items available for hire.
