The Kiwi Goggleboxers who will let us into their homes

- Dani McDonald danielle.mcdonald@ stuff.co.nz

Atrio of widowed golden oldies are among those who will be dishing out their unfiltered thoughts on Gogglebox NZ.

The reality show, screening on Three from September 19, captures selected Kiwis’ reactions on camera as they watch TV together. The format is based on the British Bafta award-winning show that aired in New Zealand last year.

Maureen, 73, Myrtle, 84, and Sybil, 91, a met after moving into the same retirement village. They’re described as being ‘‘thick as thieves’’ and sharp.

The women usually watch TV in Maureen’s apartment because she has the biggest TV. Myrtle is quite a fan of the sports channel, partly because rugby player TJ Perenara is her great-nephew.

Joining the golden oldies on our screens are best mates Andy, a 34-year-old quantity surveyor, and Hamo, a 35-year old truck driver and jack-of-all-trades.

Andy enjoys fishing, diving, skiing, paddle boarding and windsurfing.

Hamo, on the other hand, is a self-described bogan who once sold his soul on Trade Me as a fundraiser.

Then there’s the Mizsey family, headed by Lee, 52, and George, 62. Between the two, they have 11 children in their blended family, but viewers will only get to see Quentin (Q), 30, and Navaho, 22, who live at home. Lee is Nga¯ puhi, George is originally from Argentina and they have been together for 29 years.

The other household to be revealed consists of Hilary ‘‘Hilz’’ King, 67, and Mary Irwin, 69, who will share screentime

with their 13-year-old Brussels Griffon, Tebo.

Hilz is an 80s rocker from the band Red Beryl. She also works in special education and was awarded an MNZM in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. Mary was a self-defence instructor and is now investigator into workplace bullying. Both love to watch TV with a gin.

More households will be announced in the lead up to the Gogglebox NZ premiere on September 19 at 8.30pm.

Dancing With The Stars host Sharyn Casey will narrate.
