Confusion drops into future of catching competition
Yes? No? Wait?
New Zealand Cricket believed it was gone but DB Breweries say the controversial Catch-a-Million competition will return.
The confusion comes following NZC indicating yesterday the competition was to be canned.
But just a few hours later, DB said rumours of the competition’s death were greatly exaggerated. Like a batsman who skies a high ball straight to a fielder only to be dropped, the Catch-a-Million competition has seemingly been given a second chance.
After last summer creating specified zones for the onehanded-six-catching brigade to ensure crowd safety following a string of near misses and minor injuries, NZC indicated the competition had been stumped.
But in a statement released to Stuff, DB Breweries said the brewing giant is aware of rumours around the Catch-a-Million competition but confirmed it will be back at the crease this coming summer. ‘‘We can confirm that Tui Catch a Million activity has not been banned,’’ the statement said.
But exactly what the competition will look like is not yet known.
‘‘We are still in the planning stages for 2018/2019 summer activity, and while we don’t have anything to announce at the moment there are a number of exciting things in the works,’’ the statement said.
Earlier yesterday, NZC manager public affairs, Richard Boock, told Stuff: ‘‘I believe that’s not happening this year.’’
He did not elaborate on the reasons for the change of heart, or who had pushed for it.
