Windsor set for Sunday showing
Choosing art for the home is a decision that affects the whole family but finding time to browse galleries together can be difficult.
Windsor Gallery intends to make it easier this Sunday with a special, one-off exhibition of 120 artworks from 30 of New Zealand’s most exciting painters, photographers and sculptors.
Among the artists will be Mehrdad Tahan, Philip Beadle, Kees Bruin, John Burns, Anneke Bester, Lisa Powers and Andris Apse.
Wine and cheese will be provided so couples can relax and take their time at the gallery on St Asaph St, just east of Fitzgerald Ave.
Windsor Gallery has been one of Christchurch’s most prominent framers for more than a century and since moving to its new location a couple of years ago has become a leading exhibitor of art, too. Light and airy spaces support a large collection that regularly changes.
Owners Philip and Tracey Wynands say they’re always on the lookout for new artists and new ways to introduce works to the public.
‘‘We’re not usually open on Sundays so this weekend’s exhibition is a way to make the art more accessible,’’ Philip says.
‘‘Every month we get new artists – the whole thing is growing.’’
Windsor Gallery is an awardwinning framing studio which has had top-three finishes in the last two national framing competitions run by industry heavyweight Larson Juhl.
The competitions look at craftsmanship as well as how a frame’s design choices highlight and add significance to an artwork.
Windsor Gallery’s skill in all areas has made it one of the South Island’s most popular framers for new art and for modernising existing artworks with an updated moulding, fillet or mat.
Conservation materials are available, including museumgrade glass to protect against fading, and mouldings can be chosen from hundreds of different styles.
Custom frames to display memorabilia and treasured keepsakes can be created, and the gallery regularly works with corporate clients, such as hotels.
Philip says they try to keep the process as easy as possible for clients. ‘"We can work with interior designers to create the mood you want, from the colour of the frame to the style of art. And if you’re looking for inspiration, the collection is constantly evolving.’’
❚ Windsor Gallery is open weekdays 9am-5pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm. This Sunday, the gallery will open from 10am to 4pm for a special, oneoff exhibition. Find them at 386 St Asaph St, phone 366 0724 or visit them online at windsorgallery.co.nz.
