Armistice

In an informative and timely piece, ‘‘Relief at the end of a war that still offers us lessons’’ (Nov 7) Dominic Harris reminds us World War I offers a cautionary lesson to politicians of today, especially in light of the rise of the right globally.

I would add, we should not merely be reminded of the misuse of a politician’s power, but ultimately their utter lack of it.

No leader, no politician can wage war against the environment, other nations or minorities alone; our consent or participation is required, which is why pernicious politicians so readily make appeals to nationalism or religion emotion
