Second man charged with murder
Two men have been charged with the murder of a young Christchurch father.
Shayne George Heappey, a 25-year-old with a young daughter, died on December 8, after he was dropped off at Christchurch Hospital about 11pm with lifethreatening injuries.
A witness described Heappey having a stab wound in the chest.
A 31-year-old Christchurch man appeared on a charge of murder in the Dunedin District Court yesterday. He was granted interim name suppression when he appeared before Judge John McDonald.
He was remanded to appear in the Christchurch High Court on February 5. The accused is also facing four other charges, to be heard in the Christchurch District Court same day. Detective Inspector Corrie Parnell said a 29-year-old man in Christchurch was also charged with murder yesterday. He was remanded in custody and will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow. A 50-year-old man appeared in the Christchurch District Court last week accused of stabbing Heappey with intent to cause on the grievous bodily harm. He was granted interim name suppression at his first court appearance. His charge sheet alleged he jointly offended with at least one other person, whose identity was not yet known.
Parnell said additional charges were likely for all those arrested and inquiries were ongoing.
A forensic scene investigation at a Stanbury Ave property in Somerfield was due to be finished yesterday.
‘‘This has been a fast-moving inquiry with an investigation team that’s worked tirelessly to locate those responsible for the death of Mr Heappey,’’ Parnell said.
‘‘Police would like to thank the community for their assistance and reassure them that this was an isolated incident.’’
Marcus Heappey said earlier the family did not know what led to his twin brother’s death or who was responsible.
‘‘He lived life on the edge.’’
